Sign 1. You know only a few phrases in English.
A lot of users from other than English speaking countries state English as their spoken language since they believe that the conversation is more interesting and fun to talk to a person from another country. Well, it’s probably true however not in case you know just a few words in English. It’s highly possible that you will never even get a chance to use them since you won’t progress further than saying Hi! to each other. It’s only logical that you will be disappointed just as much as your conversation partner. This is especially true for people whose language is completely different from English or belongs to another language group.
Sign 2. You don’t feel confident enough to listen attentively or to be actively involved into the conversation.
Even if you think speak fluent English sometimes you are not ready psychologically to listen since you may be too afraid of communication failure. One good way out is to take a special course in successful communication since if you have this problem in English it’s almost 100% sure you have the same problem communicating in your own language. Lots of Americans and British try to finish the conversation straight when they hear an incomprehensible accent. It’s important to be more tolerant and sensible since you may just miss something important or interesting. Other cultures are so fascinating and interesting so, don’t miss a chance!
Sign 3. Your written English is perfect but you have some troubles speaking it.
You often carry correspondence with English speaking people, read books and watch movies in English? However this doesn’t necessarily mean you can SPEAK English. So, try to analyze the situation before stating English language as your fluent one in order not to say that people were not able to understand you.
Sign 4. Your English is only good enough to talk to people sharing the same language with you. You suppose your level of English is good since you’re able to talk to your country mates and to write some essays for your English language test. You even have an excellent mark in English at school or university/college. Still when you have the chance to talk to foreigner you can understand properly only 60% of his/her speech? It’s high time to start to learn colloquial spoken English!
Sign 5. You have a strong accent.
The majority of people are aware of their accent. For instance if you have a strong south American or Scottish accent try not use some specific words and vice versa try to speak simple universal language that your partner was able to understand you. The other way out is taking a special course in proper English pronunciation.
